How does Love2Learn Curriculum cover SA Geography?

We cover SA Geography as part of Geography Map work and it also is covered partially as part of History and Social Sciences in terms of the NCS books that we’ve incorporated into Love2Learn Curriculum. We also deal with it in terms of all the Provinces, their weather and what each one is “famous” for, viz. landmarks, natural resources, cities etc.

How does Love2Learn’s Maths Curriculum compare with other Curricula offered in the market place?

Love2Learn does not offer a particular maths curriculum.  In preference to this approach we have developed a specialised selection of resources in recognition of the fact that children learn differently from one another.  Even in one family two children will not learn mathematics in the same manner and a resource that works well with one child may not work at all with their sibling.  We have selected a range of materials that approach the teaching of maths from diverse angles.  This is beneficial from two perspectives.  Firstly, it helps the parent to use a resource suited to their child’s learning style.  Secondly, it trains children to answer mathematics problems posed from all sorts of angles using different wording each time.  Children sometimes fall into a comfort zone when they become too accustomed to a single maths curriculum and wording style.

We incorporated the South African National Curriculum Statement into our curriculum in order to ensure that we offer a curriculum that is above reproach from a Dept. of Education perspective. Although we comfortably meet the minimum requirements of the NCS we exceed this through the incorporation of a host of additional resources that are designed to build speed, comprehension and confidence from foundational concepts such as bonds, tables, fractions etc. onwards. What is important to point out is that we are not grooming our students for the SA Matric, we are grooming them for Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), viz. IGCSE and A-levels, (Grades 10 – 12 and post-Matric) which is where Love2Learn Curriculum ultimately culminates; and as you may be aware, CIE’s are recognised as the highest standard of Matric and post-Matric offered in the world.

What Language arts programme does Love2Learn Curriculum follow?

Language arts are extremely important.  From a classical education perspective, the skilful employment of language is paramount.  We seek to provide resources that will help to train eloquent orators who write in elegant and vigorous English.  To this end we have designed our own Language arts programme, consisting of numerous resources from various suppliers worldwide. In general a language arts year will consist of spelling and phonics (lower grades), grammar, vocabulary building, comprehension, writing and composition, poetry, speech etc.

For those families seeking a rigorous classical education approach including sentence diagramming and more, we offer a comprehensive programme. Keep in mind that the latter approach will prepare your child for a liberal arts/classics education while more than adequately preparing them to write Cambridge IGCSE’s and A-levels. We would point out that different books are used for Cambridge preparation in the final three years of high school.

What Maths and Language programme's do you provide for Grade 0?

Our Love2Learn Mathematics is an amalgamation of a number of resources designed to achieve specific criteria and to build number concepts at this critical stage. We do not offer pre-packaged maths curricula for a number of reasons.

Our Love2Learn English is also an amalgamation. Grade 0 teaches phonics and Reading. By the time a child reaches Grade 1 they need to have acquired a basic level of reading skill.  In Grade 1 children commence formal Grammar studies, Creative Writing (Character, Setting, Plot, Structure etc.), Formal Comprehension, Phonics, Spelling Tests, Poetry, Copy work etc. Our Grade 1 standard is very high and therefore our Grade 0 English builds into this.

Why does Love2Learn advocate the study of Latin?

  • It is estimated that over fifty percent of English words have their roots in Latin.  A study of Latin will render your child more proficient in the English language. Research has shown that performance on standardized tests increases markedly in students who take Latin.
  • If your child ultimately decides to study law, medicine, zoology, anatomy, theology, and many other disciplines they will be very well prepared by studying Latin.
  • The study of Latin provides an understanding of the impact the classical cultures had on our modern culture. We see this in our architecture, the names of plants and constellations, our political structures, and Latin expressions that are simply carried over into our language.
  • Students of Latin are trained in a method of rigorous analysis. The ability that is acquired in doing this is not limited to Latin. The study of Latin equips young minds to encounter unfamiliar material in a disciplined way. Latin trains the student in the essentials of scientific method: observation, comparison, and generalization.  In other words, it is a great tool to teach critical thinking.
  • Romance languages such as French, Spanish and Italian, are direct descendants of Latin. The study of Latin is a very appropriate introduction to modern language study.  Love2Learn offers French through to Cambridge Level.
  • Love2Learn families often ask “How many years of Latin is enough?”  Even a year of Latin has an impact!  A student need stay with the formal study of Latin after they matriculate.  It is still a great ongoing benefit to them. The study of Latin grammar is also a great help in understanding the nature of grammar, which carries over well into English.
  • Love2Learn offers 7 years of Latin, commencing in Grade 4 and ending in Grade 10.
  • You can commence Latin at any stage along the way, even with no prior experience!  Love2Learn will place you at the correct commencement Level.  While you may not complete all the possible years of Latin available, even a foundational study of Latin is of enormous benefit.

What are the NCS books that are listed at the end of each Core / Kern in the Price List? Are these a must, or optional?

The Core and Kern subjects we offer individually also incorporate the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) books that the Department of Education in South Africa prescribes. They are by no means the focal point of Love2Learn Curriculum, but we have included them to give parents peace of mind in cases where they are concerned that they are also covering that which children are covering in mainstream schooling. Core / Kern 2 comes standard with Grade/Graad 4 NCS books, Core / Kern 3 with Grade / Graad 5 NCS books etc; consequently unless your oldest child is in Grade / Grade 5 and doing Core / Kern 2, you need not order the additional NCS books per Grade listed at the end of each Core / Kern. Please note that we are certainly prepared to remove the NCS books from your order - kindly advise our office when placing your order and we will remove them - and we will credit you accordingly, should you so desire. Any reference to them in the Engine Room (lesson plans) that we supply as standard for those subjects may simply then be ignored.
So, while we do cover the NCS (National Curriculum Statement), this forms a VERY small part of the pie as far as the bulk of our subjects are concerned. Most of our work takes the education to a far broader and deeper level; and our entire approach is Biblical. We do not support evolution and adopt a creationist approach to science.

What are the “Extra set of consumable workbooks for sibling”/ “Ekstra stel werboeke vir broers en susters” listed on the Price List?

It is a criminal offence to photostat books without permission from the Publisher, so rather than insist that you purchase two or three of the same complete subjects for each of your children (assuming that they are doing the same Grade together) we have compiled a pack that includes just the consumable resources that make up part of a given subject, for our families to purchase. The “text” books thast make up the balance of the subject can be shared. This is also helpful where you have a younger sibling coming through the ranks – assuming that the books are still in print - you need only order the “Extra set of consumable workbooks” when they come to do the subject their older sibling has already completed. Again, this is a far more cost effective way of home-schooling, when compared with having to reorder the complete subject again.

What subjects would we need to cover (as a minimum) in terms of what the South African DoE requires?

Love2Learn Disciplined Studies by Grade:
• Maths
• English
• Afrikaans
• Learning to Read (for Grades 1 and 2)
• Learning to Write (for your Grades 1 and 2)

Love2Learn Core Studies:
• Bible and Character (not compulsory, but we view this as THE most important subject!)
• History
• Geography
• Botany and Zoology (Biology)
• Science and Technology
• Human Anatomy
• Economics
• Life Skills (Life Orientation)
• Arts and Culture (We call it Music, Arts, Poetry and Culture – MAPC)

We also offer a whole host of other “enrichment” type subjects like Critical thinking, Latin, Gardening, Cooking, Digital Photography and a host of “other” language options; which, although they are not fully-fledged the way English and Afrikaans is, they are certainly enriching and will help in terms of getting children conversant ultimately.

I don't want to portray History to my children in any way that contradicts the Bible or discounts God – what can I do?

Personally, we couldn't agree more. We’ve also discussed this with a close friend and mentor who happens also to be our Pastor; and he is the Chairman of the South African Theological Seminary (SATS), the whole issue of Australopithecus, Homos Erectus, etc..  All we can do, when surrounded with views that do not coincide with our own, is present the material from a biblical perspective. We encourage you to see it as a wonderful opportunity to build truth into your child’s life and recognise it as an object lesson opportunity.

What does your English Literature consists of?

Our English Literature does not include Literature analysis, rather it is supplied to fulfil the following purposes:

  1. Develop a love of reading.
  2. Widen horizons.
  3. Expose students to classics, including Shakespeare.
  4. Incorporate biographies.
  5. Includes historical literature.

Expose students to award-winning and modern classics.
In all of this we also endeavour to steer clear of literature that is full of goblins, witches, spells and the like!
